This Week: A week of miracles

My ability to explain miracles and stories is similar to Nephi's when he says the Lord hasn't made him mighty in writing. I can't adequately describe how I think and how I feel about the miracles that we've seen the last week. With the story of what happened to the group of people that got in an accident, I was extremely surprised and shocked. I felt much sympathy and afterwards when I heard about them praying, what they actually felt, their desire to keep learning and be baptized, I am just still at a loss of words. Just know that that is a truly amazing story that I'm sure if I knew Thai better I could relay it better.

This Week: A week of miracles

Dear Mom,

This week was a really good week. We're still seeing miracle after miracle day to day. We didn't have very many investigators at church this past week or any baptisms, but our investigator pool is still growing and I guess it's just time to really help people progress. We've been taking it slow with people, but we have several people with dates for baptism. A lot of people, actually. It's been a slower week, but not short of miracles.

We have many young investigators and they usually they aren't super interesting in learning about the Gospel (because they are usually more interested in us.... #missionprobs as Sister Sun says), but one group of friends definitely felt the Spirit at church when we taught them and they are accepting well. It's a miracle, really. We first met with the friend of a member last week while inviting at a market. She said she was friends with a member at our church so we invited her and her group of friends. She is really interested, understands well and wants to be baptized, but she doesn't have parent permission. She brought several friends to FHE Monday night and it was super fun. We had a lot of investigators come for FHE. More people there were non-members than members. We then met with some more new investigators from this group of friends. It's really cool seeing how small the world is and how the influence of peers can have such a strong affect. We met with some more people from this group again in a Gospel lesson-type setting on Thursday. We introduced more about prayer, baptism, and really just got to know them better. We committed them to prayer, but we weren't sure how interested they really were. Then another miracle happened. We called and invited them to play sports with us on Friday, but they said they had gotten into a car accident Thursday night and had a friend in the hospital. We went and visited them on Saturday. It was a really humbling thing to see. This person, an investigator and friend of ours, would probably never be able to walk again or without extreme difficulty. When we talked to them over the phone, they said that they had prayed to return home safely and were wondering if this was a sign that what they were starting to learn was bad. We assured them it wasn't and this experience, I feel, actually really strengthened their faith. The person who had prayed before the accident didn't have any serious injuries. When we visited her friend in the hospital, we learned that they had prayed together right after the accident, too. They had also prayed together in the hospital. It was so great to hear about their feelings about prayer, and it was only the second day after we had introduced them to prayer. When we asked her friend if she wanted a Priesthood blessing, she confidently said yes she did. Such faith without even having learned much. We then met with two other of her friends at church on Sunday. They accepted baptismal dates with enthusiasm and when we shared our testimonies with them, you could tell that they really felt the Spirit. That story, even though I didn't share it very clearly, is one of the amazing miracles I've felt this week. The Lord is really preparing people, no matter what age, what background, or who they were in the past. They told us that that night they were talking about what we had told them that Thursday about prayer and baptism. It was a miracle to hear about this experience and the feelings that they had. The faith of these people is so strong. The person driving the motorcycle/scooter had a large part of their foot cut away, down to the bone. They showed us pictures, it didn't look very good. Attached is a picture from FHE and English class.

We ran into another friend of an investigator as we were inviting. It was another miracles to hear that he, too, said that he wanted to be baptized. He told us about his hopes, dreams, and how he wanted to change his life, he wanted to be a missionary like us in the future and things like that. Several of these younger investigators have told us similar things. It's really great to see the change in people's lives. Now we just need to lead them to baptism.

We also met with an older lady who we found out is from the same church as another RC. We visited with her with this member and she is accepting well. She said she has prayed, but doesn't feel that this is true. The miracle her is that she is still progressing, reading the Book of Mormon, and has committed to come to our church this Sunday. I'm confident that if she will open her heart and mind all the way, she will feel of the Spirit.

We also have been able to work with a very special family referral. Surin doesn't have very many families (especially strong ones), but this family came to us and told us that on of their friends wanted to learn with us. He's a 12 year old boy and at first we thought maybe he was learning because of his friends, family, or something like that, but we met with him and he is completely willing to come on his own. He told us he felt like he needed and wanted to be baptize and is very excited for it. He's been friends with this family for a long time and has come to church numerous times. This Sunday, he'll be getting baptized after he learns all of the lessons. He has a lot of faith and has really progressed all on his own up to this point.

On Thursday, we also had an appointment with a new investigator, but they never showed up. We were very disappointed and we really didn't want to go out and invite for only a really short amount of time to just come back to the church because we had another appointment afterwards. We called people and were actually able to meet with another new investigator who had a lot of questions and was interested in learning more. They spoke clear English with a really thick southern accent. It was a humorous first visit for my companion because while he can understand and speak English very well, he had an extremely difficult time understanding a southern accent. This investigator also brought a friend with her and they both said they really want to come back and learn more.

Most of our weeks start of slow at first with P-day and district meeting on Tuesday, but by Sunday we can see the fruits of our labors. Like my trainer once said, it's like a cycle that repeats every week and Sunday is judgment day. I've seen this pattern in the past couple of weeks as we start out each week and each day with a new fire and passion. This past week was companion switch-offs week so this week was a little slow, but a good opportunity to work with other missionaries.

Elder Sang is such an amazing example. Probably the best thing is his true, sincere love for everyone we meet and his desire to help them no matter what it is. He may not know the mission rules, Preach my Gospel, or have a focus on Baptism, but he has such a rich, intense love that all of our investigators and people we meet and feel the sincerity and desire he has. I'm definitely at least a little bit concerned that we'll lose some investigators once he's gone, but I'm going to do my best to develop the Christ-like love that he has to help the people we work with more.

The miracles are so great and the people are so awesome. I love being a missionary and I love the Lord. I feel like one thing I've learned this week is that in order to invite the Spirit into our lives, into our teaching and testifying, we really need to just open our mouths and trust that the Lord will lead us to say what we need to.

This Week has been Crazy! pic 3

This Week has been Crazy!

Dear Mom,

This past week has been so chalk full of miracles. It's truly amazing. I feel like the Lord has especially blessed us this past week. We've worked hard and planned our best, and despite everything that occurs out of our control, things always work out for the best. Least of all, this week we hit a record high of new investigators, lessons, and other such that I've seen in Surin. There's so much that has happened this week. We had the most people I've seen come to sports night in the park, BoM class, and church on Sunday.

One person we've been working with we met at his shop when my bike broke down one day. We stopped and talked to him and he talked about how he wanted his son to have better examples in his life and felt that we could help. We were finally able to meet with both his wife and his son. We're now good friends with them, especially his son, and he's making good progress. His friends aren't the best examples for him, but we gave him a For the Strength of Youth pamphlet and when we met with him again, he said he had kept the pamphlet in his shirt pocket to remind him. We ran into him while inviting on Sunday and with two more of his friends. He's introduced at least five of his school friends to us now. We also talked to him about serving a mission (he's 16) and we gave them inviting cards to give to people at his school. This kid really is a miracle. He is a bit of a rebel child who drinks and smokes, but knows what's right and seems to have a sincere desire to make steps in the right direction. My companion is really a little ball of fire when it comes to just about everything. He really is a tremendous example and there's a pretty big chance that when he's/I am gone, things will be quite different for all of the people we've been working with. I sometimes wonder how I can help people that I meet feel the same kind of friendship that they feel with him.

One day, we had a lesson in the morning, but they canceled and rescheduled later that day. At first I was sad, but in the end it all worked out. We had a potential investigator call us and asked if we could meet with her at the church at the time that our previous appointment canceled. She brought three other people with her and said she had been studied and learned all about Christianity, but had not been baptized. She said when we first contacted her on the street, it was a really amazing thing. She told us about how great of a miracle it was that she was actually able to come and meet with us. They were really accepting and it was a really powerful lesson. We were then able to meet with the other investigator and have a good lesson.

Another miracle was as we were waiting for an appointment to show up, we weren't sure if they would come on time before we had to return home, but right before we were about to return home, they showed up and we were able to teach them, and their girlfriend that they had brought with them that day.

We had a lot of investigators come to Book of Mormon class on Sunday and it was great to get some new investigators to come to church and meet some members, even if some people weren't able to come to church on Sunday. We even had three friends and family members come, too.

We were able to finally contact and visit an investigator that we had thought had lost interested a long time ago. We were able to visit in their home and discuss their concerns about their family.

We now have several investigators that are all in the same boat of needing permission from parents to be baptized. I know that it's a great thing to have people who have problems in common who can support each other and I'm sure that as we continue to work with these people, they'll be able to support, understand, and build each others faith.

Perhaps one of the biggest miracles was when we called an investigator that we lost contact from for over two weeks, and they actually picked up! They told us that they wanted to be baptized and we were working on helping them progress, but they had lost their phone and we couldn't let them know about the Stake Conference in Ubon. They finally answered, and we set up their baptism for this past Sunday. Everything worked against us for this baptism. The church in Surin didn't have any water. We needed to clean the font and on Saturday we talked to the neighbor who said we could use their water, but they didn't have any water either. They said we could come back tomorrow and they would have water again. We were frantic with the preparations and we went to the church early to clean and fill the font. We went back to the neighbor, but they said they didn't know how to work the water and the home owner was away. We resolved to go to a lake at a near by park if necessary. We were busy trying to figure out how we were going to have this baptismal service, calling LA members to come to church too, and taking care of all of the other investigators we had had church (our companionship had 10 people). Right before sacrament meeting, a member came to us saying that the neighbors had water! Right after the sacrament we cleaned the font and starting filling it. We met with the branch president, filled out the paper work, and then found out the the neighbor's water stopped working again and the font wasn't filled. Everything was working against us still up until the point when we found out that the investigator to be baptized actually had a problem that didn't come up earlier or in the interview and they couldn't be baptized in the end. It was actually really sad. They had prepared two sets of clothes of their own and had prepared everything for this. They brought a white dress of their own to be baptized in because the church in Surin doesn't have one of their own. I suppose the Lord know this person wasn't really fully ready and despite all the fighting we did, it wasn't meant to be - this week. It was a really crazy week, especially past couple of days.

Keeping everyone straight, knowing the needs of everything is almost like a circus sometimes, haha. This week, with all of our new investigators along with our older ones, we have a lot, a ton, to do to actually prepare people to build faith, repent, and to be baptized this Sunday. We'll have to see where this week leads us.

I'm so grateful for the opportunity to serve here in Surin, in Thailand, at this time and for all of the many blessings, miracles, and experiences that the Lord gives us every day. I know that He is in His work 100% and he knows who he wants in His church. We've given out more baptismal dates and challenges than ever before and I only hope that we can adequately heed the promptings of the Spirit day by day to lead all of the people we've met to the waters of baptism once they are truly ready. It's hard to fully consecrate on the work all the time, but I feel that as we try the Lord will lift us to do more and become more than we would be able to alone. This week is going to be the last for my companion in Surin, and possibly for me too, so I hope we can make it a great one!

I wish you a great week too!

This Week was Stake Conference

Dear Mom,

This week has been pretty tremendous. The highlight of this week was zone training and stake conference for sure. I felt like all of the talks, thoughts, and messages were so helpful to me. The formation of another stake in Thailand is a huge indicator of growth! We went to Ubon Thursday night and got back Sunday night. It was a tremendous serious of days filled with spiritual thoughts, exciting news, and a tremendous outpouring of the Spirit. We were also able to meet up with other missionaries and members from Ubon which is always a good reunion. It's really impossible to adequately sum up all of the things that occur every week here in Thailand. The news of the temple, the formation of a new stake, continual growth of membership in the church, and not to mention all of the wonderful talks, speakers, and insights from leaders, meetings, and conferences. Another major event/change coming up is that President and Sister Senior are close to the end of their mission. They'll be finishing their missions in less than a few days. Their example, help, and guidance have been instrumental in all of the miracles that have occurred in the church in Thailand and in the personal ministry of every missionary here. 3 Nephi 27:10 "...if it so be that the church is built upon my gospel then will the Father show forth his own works in it." I've definitely seen divine works in this, His true church. The Lord is a God of miracles and is still working mighty miracles.

I really loved the theme and focus on hope and on the Atonement. It really made me think about what is real hope and real joy. It also helped me help an RC because no matter what happens, we can have hope and joy through the Atonement. We also had an investigator go to Ubon with us and I'm confident that he was touched by the messages also. I know I was. Now we're back in Surin and ready to work. I feel the Lord's hand in the work everyday and am truly grateful for the guidance and blessings that He gives us. There were really too many great thoughts shared to list or summarize them all, but I felt the truth that the Lord is in the details of our lives and we need not fear, only hope and act with faith.

One thing that I wish to share from this week is simply a message of hope and joy. Hope in the Atonement and the promise of joy. I've really felt the truth of the promise that we can feel great joy in the fruit of our labors of missionary work. No matter what happens in life, we can also have hope because the Lord has promised that all things will work for our good (DC 90:24). When we "hunger and thirst after righteousness, we can be filled with the Holy Ghost" which "shall fill our soul with joy". As we search the scriptures diligently, pray always, and remember the covenant made at baptism, the Lord promises to us that we will receive eternal life if we endure to the end. He promises that we will have His Spirit which will give us hope and fill us with joy for we know that we can obtain this gift which is the greatest gift of God.

I know that God lives, that He loves us, wants the best for us, and is watching out for us. I know that He sent His son as an act of love and that Christ really did atone for us and conquer death, both physical and spiritual. I know that as we serve Him faithfully throughout our lives, He promises all that He has will be ours - all of the joy, happiness, knowledge, and blessings that He has. He invites us to become like Him and He provides the way to do it. He has given each of us incredible gifts that, through Him, we can learn, grow, develop, and achieve all that He has set for us. Through both the healing and enabling power of the Atonement, we can make necessary changes in our lives and receive strength to keep pushing through trials that help polish our souls. I'm so grateful for the opportunity to be a missionary here at this time and so thankful for all of the truly tremendous experiences I have - and will yet have. Thanks for your Christ-like example and for helping me become the person I am.

Elder Sun

I like scripture chains...

DC 90:24 "Search diligently, pray always, and be believing, and all things shall work together for your good, if ye walk uprightly and remember the covenant wherewith ye have covenanted one with another."
3 Nephi 12:6 "And blessed are all they who do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled with the Holy Ghost."
DC 11:13 "Verily, verily, I say unto you, I will impart unto you of my Spirit, which shall enlighten your mind, which shall fill your soul with joy;"

DC 16:6 "And now, behold, I say unto you, that the thing which will be of the most worth unto you will be to declare repentance unto this people, that you may bring souls unto me, that you may rest with them in the kingdom of my Father. Amen."
DC 18:15 "And if it so be that you should labor all your days in crying repentance unto this people, and bring, save it be one soul unto me, how great shall be your joy with him in the kingdom of my Father!"
DC 6:31 "But if they reject not my words, which shall be established by the testimony which shall be given, blessed are they, and then shall ye have joy in the fruit of your labors."

DC 14:7 "And, if you keep my commandments and endure to the end you shall have eternal life, which gift is the greatest of all the gifts of God."

Hello Mom Pic

Hello Mom

Dear Mom,

Elder Wager is 12 weeks younger in the mission than me. I only cooked a few simple things at the restaurant and I also have no idea what kinds of trees there are in Thailand - just that there are a lot of them and some even have fruit that you can usually eat. I'm so excited for Sabrina and it'll be great to her about how it is in Japan.

This week the thing that was the most exciting is that I have child. He's super awesome, a tremendous example, and actually is going on a mission to Ogden, Utah on the 21st of July. I'm training him for a transfer before he leaves and to be honest, he's actually training me. He's teaching me so much and is such a great example of Christ. He's older than me, looks younger than me, and has the spiritual maturity far beyond his age. He's so handsome, takes after his father. He has an amazing conversion story and just last transfer, nearly all of his family members were baptized! He loves to cook - is really good at it, and is a bundle of fun. Last Saturday, I learned my companion, Elder Kettavong was moving and on Thursday we went back over to Bangkok and that's where I met my new companion - Brother Off/Elder Sangsuwan. He's not yet set apart and is on a mini mission with me for a transfer. He's got such great passion and fire. I'll for sure learn a lot - already have.

The RC of mine is still having a hard time at this time, and I just hope she stays strong and relies on Christ. In life, we will for sure face challenges and struggles, and as PMG says there is often a "wall of faith that everyone faces and there we must make our stand".

Thanks for the scriptures and updates. Next week, our area is going to become a stake. The third in Thailand! It's so exciting! On Thursday, we'll be traveling a few hours over to Ubon for stake conference and zone training. We'll get back Sunday night and I'm sure it'll be another unusual/interesting week summary next Monday.

This week, another one in Surin.

This week, another one in Surin.

Hello Mom!

So I'm staying in Surin another transfer. Elder Daybell left and a rather new missionary Elder Wager replaced him. This week, things are okay. We have three investigators that are ready to be baptized this Sunday. I've realized that the more we focus on what we can do, thinking what more we can do to work hard and to do are part, the more happiness we have and the easier it is to keep doing what we need to do.

Sorry I haven't written much at all this week. I have far too much to write about to even think about what to write. I'll see what I can do later.

Elder Sun

When Elder Daybell left, we helped a member work at her restaurant.

I wore my gold tie on the 30th. My companion forgot his tag.

We also helped clear a field.
